Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins live only in New Zealand.
![]() As a consequence of human activity, numbers of Hector’s dolphins have dropped by around 70 per cent since the 1970s, whilst Maui’s dolphins are now the rarest marine dolphins in the world with just 111 animals left. Human activity including trawl and set net fishing is currently killing Hector’s and Maui’s dolphins faster than they can breed. Scientists believe that Maui’s dolphins will be effectively extinct within a generation, unless they are protected from all human threats throughout their range.
