According to Jean-François Etter, an expert at Geneva University's Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine, Bern has little idea of the consequences of adding such flavouring to cigarettes and has also failed to diclose some crucial facts about the issue. In the latest publication of weekly magazine "Medicine and Hygiene", Etter pointed out that chocolate contains a substance called Theobromine, which dilates bronchial tubes in the lungs, preventing their natural defense against smoke. The risks of pulmonary diseases and dependence are therefore increaseed, he argued. The prospect of pleasant tasting coffee and caramel cigarettes would provoke more young people to take up smoking he adds and uses the rising popularity of alcopops as a comparison.
